English BGCSE: Reading Comprehension

Reading comprehension is the ability to process text, understand its meaning, and to integrate it with what the reader already knows. This course will prepare students to take Paper 3 and Paper 4 of the English BGCSE and such papers focus on reading comprehension. Thus, this course is designed to develop critical and analytical skills that will allow students to draw their own conclusions about what they read. Students will also examine writer’s techniques and various elements of style that create specific effects on readers.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
Use comprehension strategies to build literal and inferred meaning;
Identify new vocabulary through contextual clues;
Identify rhetorical modes to enhance comprehension and effective writer’s techniques;
Demonstrate an ability to summarize paragraphs;
Apply critical thinking skills to the reading process;
Apply scanning skills to comprehend specific details;
Identify topic and main idea and supporting details of analyzed paragraphs.

Unit 1: Introduction
This unit is a basic introduction to reading comprehension and its importance.

This unit encourages students to widen their vocabulary and use their analytical skills to understand word definitions and construe meaning of words within contexts.

This unit covers the element of "tone." Student will be able to identify specific tones used in selected passages and discuss their effects.

This unit introduces students to character and characterization. Students will perform character studies, examining and analyzing character traits within stories.

This unit introduces students to rhetorical devices or writer technique while also requiring students to examine the effects of such devices.

Students will analyze and discuss writer's use of comprehension elements, including tone, character and techniques and literary devices.

This unit is all about getting practice with BGCSE papers. Students will complete two sets of English BGCSE Paper 3 and English BGCSE Paper 4
