Reading comprehension is the ability to process text, understand its meaning, and to integrate it with what the reader already knows. This course will prepare students to take Paper 3 and Paper 4 of the English BGCSE and such papers focus on reading comprehension. Thus, this course is designed to develop critical and analytical skills that will allow students to draw their own conclusions about what they read. Students will also examine writer’s techniques and various elements of style that create specific effects on readers.
Use comprehension strategies to build literal and inferred meaning;
Identify new vocabulary through contextual clues;
Identify rhetorical modes to enhance comprehension and effective writer’s techniques;
Demonstrate an ability to summarize paragraphs;

Unit 1: Introduction
This unit is a basic introduction to reading comprehension and its importance.
Unit 2: Words-In-Context + Tone
This unit encourages students to widen their vocabulary and use their analytical skills to understand word definitions and construe meaning of words within contexts. This unit also covers the element of "tone." Student will be able to identify specific tones used in selected passages and discuss their effects.
Unit 3: Characterization
This unit introduces students to character and characterization. Students will perform character studies, examining and analyzing character traits within stories.
Unit 4: Writer's Techniques
This unit introduces students to rhetorical devices or writer technique while also requiring students to examine the effects of such devices.
Unit 5: Writer's Techniques Con't
This unit continues to examine rhetorical devices or writer techniques.
